Christian Unity

The Vision of Enfield Gospel Festival (EGF) is to depict Christian unity in reaching the borough of Enfield with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In John 17:21, Jesus describes unity with the Father as ‘You in Me and I in You’. Each gave Himself to the other in total surrender, yet each maintained his own personality. As believers, it is often easier to give ourselves to God than to give ourselves to one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. Christ prayed for the Unity of the believers, the visible unity which is the greatest form of Evangelism. It is good to see believers united, not so much within their denominations but in Christ. The only way people in the world can learn of Christ is from what we show them and what we tell them – first by our lives then by our lips.

The Nature of unity

The unity Christ spoke of, I believe, is not
  • Union, where churches join together to form one fellowship
  • Uniformity, where everyone worships in the same way and follow the same kind of church order
  • Unanimity, where everyone thinks the same way about everything

I believe Jesus was referring to the bonding of one believer to another because of an over-riding sense of belonging to the same family in such a way it affects all thinking, decisions and actions. This goes deeper than denominational affiliation and is analogous with the Father and Son’s relationship; analogous to the mystical unity enjoyed by the Father and Son. This is spiritual unity, which cannot be imposed on the Church by simply getting together. It is something that has to be exposed from within the Body of Christ by those who really know they belong to the Lord. When we are in unity with God, harmony spreads itself as we take on the significance of the One with whom we are united. EGF is not about a particular church or denomination but about Jesus’ disciples, The Church. We belong to Christ and realise that because of this we belong to everyone else who belongs to Christ.

Evangelism

In John 17:20, Jesus prayed not only for His disciples but also for those who would come to believe in Him through their message. He prayed that all of them may be one as He and the Father were one. The message is the Gospel, the Good News. Our Mission is to move out to extend the Kingdom of God, reaching those who do not yet belong to Christ. EGF is about taking that Good News to the people of Enfield.

This is the vision of Enfield Gospel Festival and for which we are asking churches / denominations to get involved.
